Full degrees, master's programmes, exchanges, research stays: the Universidad de Zaragoza draws students from many countries. Which papers you need depends less on the course than on the passport you hold.
Students from the EU, the EEA or Switzerland need no visa. A stay beyond three months means registering with form EX-18, which brings the green certificate and your NIE. The file shows the enrolment, health cover and enough money to live on.
Everyone else applies for a student visa at the Spanish consulate before flying. Expect to show the admission letter, proof of means and health insurance, sometimes more. Begin the moment the admission is confirmed: consulates run their own appointment queues.
Once in Zaragoza, non-EU students on a long course book the toma de huellas and file form EX-17 for the TIE. Late summer is peak season for these slots, so book during your first days in the city rather than after welcome week.
Whatever the passport, put your new address on the padrón. In shared flats the main tenant or the owner usually has to sign an authorisation, so ask for it on the day you get the keys.
One habit that pays off: keep a folder, paper or digital, holding passport, visa, enrolment letter, padrón certificate and each appointment confirmation. Extensions ask for the same set again, and round two is painless when nothing has to be hunted down.
