Studying in Zaragoza from outside the EU

An offer from the Universidad de Zaragoza, or from another recognised school, opens a two-stage process. Stage one: a student visa from the Spanish consulate, before you fly. Stage two: a TIE, once in Zaragoza. EU students skip stage one and register for the green certificate.

  • Student visa
  • EX-17

Case stages

4 steps
  1. 1 Admission Start here
  2. 2 Visa
  3. 3 Fingerprints
  4. 4 TIE

01Stage one, at home: the visa

  • The admission or enrolment letter from your university or school
  • A valid passport
  • Evidence that you can support yourself throughout the course
  • Health insurance valid in Spain
  • Whatever else your consulate lists, a criminal record check or a medical certificate for example

02Stage two, in Zaragoza: the TIE

If your visa covers a long course, reserve the toma de huellas in Zaragoza and file form EX-17 for the TIE. The card carries your NIE and your student status, and you show it each time you fly home and back during the year.

Handle this in week one. Late summer and early autumn are peak season for these slots, with freshly arrived students all over Spain competing for the same kind of booking.

03Earning while studying

Student status allows some paid work, under conditions, and internships tied to a course follow their own rules. Check your permit before signing any contract; we can suggest which questions to put to the employer.

04Week-one checklist

  • Reserve the toma de huellas
  • Put your new address on the padrón
  • Copy the visa, the passport and the enrolment letter
  • Open a bank account once your NIE is on paper
  • Ask the international office about its own internal steps
