01NIE first, NUSS second
Your social security number hangs off your identity, so the treasury wants your NIE or TIE when you apply. That is why the NIE heads every new-hire checklist we put together.
02Who applies
Certain employers apply on your behalf during onboarding; others want you to turn up with the number. Both happen. Ask HR which way theirs works, and if it lands on you, we list what to prepare.
03What the application takes
- Passport, plus whatever shows your NIE
- The treasury's application form
- Proof of address, on request
- Your contract or offer, if already signed
04Afterwards
- Store your NUSS alongside your contract
- Sign up at your health centre once on the padrón
- Check your details on the first payslip
In Zaragoza
Here the number comes from the Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social, not from the police office on Avenida de Valencia. Lots of people hired at PLAZA or on the industrial estates near Cuarte de Huerva, Villanueva de Gállego and La Muela are signed up by their employer, which can only happen once the NIE exists.
