01Who needs to register
Anyone from the EU, the EEA or Switzerland moving to Spain for more than three months: the new shift manager at a logistics hub, the engineer seconded to a plant, the researcher, the student, the retiree. An earlier NIE carries over; the certificate reuses it.
02On the desk at your appointment
- EX-18, completed and signed
- Valid passport or national identity card, with a copy
- Modelo 790, código 012, paid
- Evidence of your situation: a contract or social security sign-up when employed; a self-employed registration; or resources and health cover when not working
- Students: proof of enrolment, together with health cover and resources
03Contract, enrolment, or neither
Everyone receives the same certificate; only the evidence differs. Employees have the lightest folder, since a contract or an alta in social security usually suffices. Students and people living on savings must prove both means and health cover, and that is where files fall short most often.
A case starts by placing you on the right route, so the evidence you collect is the evidence that route asks for.
04Once it is issued
- Get onto the padrón at the ayuntamiento, if not done yet
- Pass the NIE to your employer or university
- Open an account with your name on it
- Request a social security number if HR has not

Questions
No: there is no photo on it. Carry your passport or identity card with it.
None is printed on it. If your personal details change, ask us how to bring it in line.
It does not. A non-EU relative applies for a card of their own, with form EX-19, once you are registered.
Yes, through the means-and-health-cover route, which asks for more paperwork. Describe your situation and we check what fits.
